The System

The System, something that is supposed to protect us, but fails to do so. In Haruki Murakami’s acceptance speech for the Jerusalem prize for the Freedom of Individual in Society, he said “Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg” in which the high, solid wall is The System and the egg that breaks against it is us, “a unique, irreplaceable soul enclosed in a fragile shell.” Even though we have created and implemented this System which is supposed to help us, many times rather than not, the System is not following its purpose.

Take the United States healthcare system for example. Our country has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world, but does that make our system the best in the world? No! In fact, the United States even has a lower life expectancy than many other nations. Every year, the average healthcare prices are increasing as medicines and medical procedures are costing much more in the United States compared to that in other countries. With these increasing prices, many Americans are not able to afford insurance, which leads many of them to avoid having medical care because of its high cost. Our system, implemented to keep us healthy, as Murakami said, “begins to kill us and cause us to kill others.”
